Common Cockroach Species in Sydney
Understanding these species' characteristics is crucial for effective pest control and maintaining a healthy environment.
German Cockroach
(Blattella germanica)
10–16 mm in length; colour varies from tan to dark brown; two dark lines run from the back of the head (pronotum) to the base of the wings; wings present but rarely used for flight.
Prefers warm, humid, and dark environments; commonly found in kitchens and bathrooms, under refrigerators and dishwashers, inside cupboards, drawers, and electrical appliances; also in drains, ducts, and underground structures.
Highly sociable, often found in large groups near warm areas like water heaters; primarily nocturnal but may be seen during the day if disturbed or in crowded populations; emits an unpleasant odour when excited or frightened.
Lives up to six months; reaches sexual maturity within several weeks; females carry the ootheca (egg case) until hatching, producing up to 20,000 young annually; each ootheca contains 30–40 eggs.

American Cockroach
(Periplaneta americana)
30–50 mm in length; reddish-brown colour with a pale-brown or yellow band around the edge of the pronotum; similar to the Australian cockroach but lacks well-defined yellow markings on the pronotum and wings; adults have wings and can fly short distances.
Inhabits warm, moist areas; commonly found in hospitals, bakeries, food stores, warehouses, factories, and residences; prefers high temperatures (~29 °C) and does not tolerate low temperatures well; found in wall and roof voids, crawl spaces, cracks, crevices, drains, and sewers.
Omnivorous and opportunistic feeder; prefers decaying organic material but will consume various human and animal foods, as well as paper and clothing; can travel quickly and fit into small cracks despite large size; emits a “musty” odour due to aggregation pheromones.
Females produce an average of 9–10 oothecae, each containing 16 eggs; egg cases are placed near food sources; nymphs emerge in 6–8 weeks and mature in 6–12 months; adults can live up to two years, with a reproductive cycle lasting up to 600 days.
Australian Cockroach
(Periplaneta australasiae)
23–35 mm in length; similar in appearance to the American cockroach but slightly smaller; yellow margin on the thorax and yellow streaks at the sides near the wing base; yellow markings are clearly defined on the pronotum and forewings.
Prefers food of plant origin; commonly found outdoors under the bark of trees, in leaf litter, wood piles, greenhouses, and moist, decaying vegetable matter; also found in subfloors, wall voids, roof voids, garages, and sheds; thrives in warm climates and is not cold-tolerant.
More frequently encountered in warm, subtropical, and tropical conditions; known to fly in warm weather; often seen darting out of sight when disturbed; can fit into small cracks despite large size; very mobile and capable of short-distance flight.
Females deposit oothecae containing 24 eggs; nymphs take 6–12 months to develop into adults.

Brown-Banded Cockroach
(Supella longipalpa)
Relatively small; adult males ~14 mm, females ~10 mm; pale brown with two light bands of yellow or cream across the thorax and abdomen; bands are noticeable on nymphs and females; males have wings covering the full abdomen and can fly; females have shorter wings and are unable to fly.
Primarily an indoor pest; prefers less humid environments compared to German cockroaches; commonly found in furniture, behind pictures, and in lounge suites; often referred to as the “furniture” cockroach.
Mostly active at night; opportunistic feeder with a preference for starchy foods; sightings during the day are not unusual; can be difficult to control due to widespread distribution in buildings; males may fly when disturbed or in high temperatures.
Females produce small oothecae (~5 mm) containing up to 18 eggs; each female can produce about 13 oothecae in her lifetime; egg cases are attached to surfaces, often on the upper third of walls; development from nymph to adult takes about 2–4 months; lifespan is approximately 3–6 months; each female can produce between 100–260 offspring.
How To Recognise Cockroach Presence Infestation?
Identifying cockroach infestation symptoms should be done early to treat it at the very first stage. Consider the following measures to find out:
- Cockroaches found in sight: Most common in dark, damp areas such as kitchens and bathrooms.
- Droppings: Tiny, dark, cylindrical droppings often found very close to food storage or appliances.
- Capsules that have eggs: Small brown capsules that contain cockroach eggs.
- Strange Odors: This musty odour usually accompanies a very high cockroach infestation.
- Shed Skins: Evidence left by cockroaches to show that they were once present as they shed off their skin during maturity.
